I would like to thank my colleagues for their presence this morning, and I know that we have a little more drift ago in a quantity of los Senate today on the calendar. We have a series of consultations and a number of things are happening on the ground, you will see a few senators come and go here.
I would like to join our group of witnesses. Indeed, we originally had two panels, and Attorney General Hood Bowman and Commissioner kindly allowed only consolidate the two plates, I think, easier to everyone. But I would like to thank everyone for their presence.
Much of what we are talking about today is damage and accident insurance business industry. I think any fair play, but it is usually the focus - this property and accident insurance lines. We really want this and for the industry and look at the insurance markets to the USA to ensure that the sector healthy, they do so, so that customers and consumers are served here and across the country.
I want to thank Senator INOUYE what I am about this chair this morning. He invited a number of witnesses today, many of whom are said yes.
And we thank you click here.
I would point out that we try to load a number of accidents and associations to appear today. Some have been conflicts. Some saw as follows might look a little friendly place for it, this is regrettable.
We do not include all the names, Senator Lott.
But anyway, for various reasons, none of them have been revealed so far, but they had been invited and we would like you to know that they have been invited. We wanted to give them a chance to speak their piece.
I would like my very, very quickly, and then allow the agency to give their speeches. We have a few senators, we must rieselt out and cover other hearings, which the chair is the ranking or to be members or someone, et cetera. Let me give you very brief.
You know, we had a terrible hurricane season in 2005. There were a large number of houses and personal property were damaged, as everywhere in the Gulf of Mexico and this country.
However, in 2005, was regarded as one of the most profitable years for the insurance industry. The damage and accidents insurers deserves a victory unprecedented $ 28 billion in the year 2006, reversing a net loss of $ 5.4 billion in’05. Participation in surplus, the surplus rose for the fourth year in 2006 law, which corresponds to about $ 498 billion to 13.5 per cent of approximately $ 439 billion.
While the profitability of the industry is not questioned, dealing with clients, insurance, consumers damage by accident insurance and industry, the concerns of some flats. We heard in our office, and I am sure that everyone in the Senate, Senator heard today, complaints filed by various types of elements, as they were treated, by their companies ‘insurance, and I am sure that some of them are very valid.
Some of them can therefore based on misunderstandings or false market, et cetera, so we have no doubt that understanding.
We know that the insurance sector is a very important industry for this country. There are many issues to insurance. It is an important part of the economy of our nation. It is very important that all citizens of this country and indeed throughout the world.
So what I want is that our panel to recognize today, so that they can make some statements, and then, if we want to make a few speeches at the opening - but I know there are some senators who look forward to the continued hearings.
If the OK button with colleagues? Is this OK?
Allow me to introduce, thereafter, they speak. And then we give every five minutes, a preliminary statement. Should you be as brief as I know, we would be happy, but I know that you are here with us and has traveled a long distance and some important things to say.
First, Attorney General Jim Hood. It is the Attorney General of the State of Mississippi, and I have a preference in my heart Federal Attorney General, because I used.
Hood: we are all the same.
Pryor: You know, it occurred to me, this organization, I appreciated as Attorney General.
We Julie Benafield Bowman. It is the representative of the Arkansas Insurance Department. It is good that you’re here.
Then we Dr. Robert Hunter, director of insurance for the Consumer Federation of America.
And finally, we have David Regan, Vice President, Legislative Affairs, National Automobile Dealers Association.
So once again, I thank you all for being here.
Attorney General Hood, if you open it.
Hood: Thank you, Senator Pryor. Thank you very much for your country in our man, fled the storm, and many of you and by other states. You know, the glimmer of hope in all this, as church groups were down and back-and-hergerissen, sheetrock and are also a lot for our people of the Gulf Coast.
And with the Senate and Senator Lott for all the work you do and we have more and more money to try to help us with our feet here for our homeowners and businesses.
